Professional Skills

Software Development

I specialize in back-end and database development. During my first professional software development career I developed primarily in C++ and some Visual Basic 6. During my second professional software development career I've been developing solutions exclusively in C# hosted in the cloud. I started developing in C# with the release of .NET Framework 1.0.

The vast majority of recent software development has been exclusively writing ASP.NET Core Web APIs and Azure Function applications in Microsoft Azure. One project I developed the APIs for was a CIO 100 Award recipient in 2023. Recently I have been interested in .NET performance and mobile development with .NET MAUI.

Arborist

I started climbing trees about 6 months prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. I bought a bunch of tree climbing gear and taught myself how to climb and run a chainsaw watching YouTube videos. Most of the tree work I do is personal, however, I also do tree work for homeowners and small businesses. I enjoy the challenges and problem solving involved with being an arborist, similar to the same problem solving skills required with software development.

Tree work has taught me how to work outside my comfort zone. Sometimes it is necessary to do things or position your body in unique ways that can be rather frightening. Tree work provides a great sense of accomplishment.

Electronic Timing

I started timing participatory sports in 2002 and formally started my first timing business in March 2003. I quit my day job in April 2006 to become full-time self employed. I used several different timing systems throughout my professional timing career. With my software development and technology background, I was able to time practically any event. My second timing company officially launched in 2025.

The highlights of my sports timing career include:

  • Men's U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials (NYC 2007)
  • Women's U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials (Boston 2008)
  • Bank of America Chicago Marathon (2007-2019)
  • BAA Boston Marathon (2008-2019)
  • Chevron Houston Marathon (2014-2019)
  • NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships (2004, 2005, 2023)
